Being a Principal of a secondary senior high school is an extremely rewarding job. At Clarkson Community High School, we believe the kids come first. Our school is about hard work, serious fun and good old common sense.

Parents want to see high quality opportunities open for their kids and for the school to provide fundamental life skills such as literacy and numeracy.

Clarkson Community High School has developed a program called SAIL (School Accountability to Improve Learning) that has delivered real improvements for kids' literacy and numeracy as proved in state-wide testing in 2007. Clarkson students are now performing on par with State progress.

The SAIL program was recognised as outstanding practice in the Smart School International Conference in Malaysia last year.

Working alongside parents, we know that a fundamental goal is to provide a vocational outcome, a successful job pathway for every student. They are provided with the skills and support needed to find a career in the trades or professions.

The State Government has recently agreed to fund a $12.6 million TAFE annexe on our school site. This will provide an outstanding resource to equip kids with the skills to suceed in the booming WA economy and life beyond.

Working in partnership with local business and property developer Satterly, the school has ensured the construction and operation of The Shed at Brighton, which provides and excellent venue for training in a multitude of building trades. The project won a Prime Minister's Award in 2007.

I am proud to be the Principal of Clarkson Community High School and look forward to continuing to work towards making sure that each student achieves his or her goals.

John Young, Principal
